Terra Del Sole
Terra del Sole is the first ever agrivoltaics project supported in Italy by Coldiretti (the largest Italian farmers association) and Legambiente (one of the most prominent environmental associations in the country)
The project is located in the Municipality of Giugliano (north-western area of the Province of Naples) and is currently under construction. Once completed, it will comprise 112,664 bifacial photovoltaic modules and 246 field inverters, with a total capacity of over 73 MWp.
The project collaborates with universities and research institutions, including the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, to support farmers in selecting suitable crops and to monitor agrometeorological conditions, soil conditions, water conservation and impacts on crops.
Involvement of local operators/manpower in the design, construction and management phases.
Collaboration with local professional and technical high schools, through training internships for students in the running phase.
Once completed, the project will generate over 130 GWh of clean, sustainable energy annually, enough to meet the needs of approximately 45,000 households and avoid more than 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
As part of the crop plan, horticultural crops suited to the local area will be grown alongside arable crops, predominantly legumes, to produce hay for local livestock farms.
To ensure an adequate water supply, two storage reservoirs for water supplied by the local irrigation consortium are planned to meet the crops’ irrigation needs. High-efficiency irrigation systems and digital irrigation advisory tools will also be installed to optimise water use.
The project will also feature single-axis solar trackers, allowing agricultural vehicles to pass both between and underneath the rows of panels.
